Chuck Berman

Nominee: Chuck Berman Photographer, Chicago Tribune

Chuck Berman has been a Chicago Tribune photographer for almost 30 years. He was a staff photographer for the Northern Star in 1973 and became photo chief the next year. He graduated in 1974. Mentions Hallie Hamilton as a friend and mentor - "I probably wouldn't be a photographer if not for him."

Staff photographer for the Freeport (Ill.) Journal-Standard, 1975.

Photographer and reporter for the Woodstock (Ill.) Daily Sentinel, 1975-76.

Waukegan News-Sun, 1976-78.

In 1978, moved to suburban Tribune, located in Hinsdale. This was the suburban supplement to the Chicago Tribune and covered 11 areas surrounding Chicago. When the Tribune merged the staffs of its downtown and suburban papers, Chuck joined the downtown paper in 1983 and has been there ever since.

Chuck has mainly been a general-assignment staff photographer - lots of breaking news, politics, features, some sports. He also has done a lot of criminal justice and death-penalty issues.

He's been married to Tribune reporter Barbara Brotman since 1983. They have two daughters: Robin, 18, and Nina, 16. They live in Oak Park.
